Bot Followers and Engagement Pods: How to Catch Them in Five Minutes

Fake engagement has gotten more sophisticated, but the tells haven't disappeared — they've just moved slightly. Here's a five-minute check that catches most of what matters before a deal gets signed.

Look at the comment-to-like ratio. A dramatically low comment count relative to likes, especially on a creator whose content style would normally invite discussion, suggests likes are being purchased or pod-generated while comments (harder to fake convincingly at volume) lag behind.

Read ten comments, not the comment count. Generic, interchangeable comments ("Amazing!", "Love this!", posted within seconds of each other) are the clearest and most common sign of an engagement pod. Genuine engagement tends to reference specific content in the post.

Check follower growth curve, not just current count. A sudden, sharp spike in followers with no corresponding viral moment (no matching spike in views, shares, or press mentions) is one of the more reliable bot-purchase signals, and it's visible in any basic analytics view.

Compare engagement rate against the creator's own historical average. A post with engagement dramatically above the creator's normal range, without an obvious reason (no trending audio, no notable topic), is worth a second look before treating it as representative.

Sample a handful of follower profiles directly. A cluster of followers with no profile photo, no posts, and generic usernames is a stronger signal than any aggregate metric — it takes sixty seconds and catches what averages hide.

Harpper runs these checks automatically across every shortlist candidate, before you spend the five minutes yourself.
